SCOTTISH CHIEF - w3s
1,053t 1856 St. John, N.B.
From
a painting by R.B. Spencer
Frank C. Bowen's "The
Golden Age of Sail"
NB - The National Maritime Museums's "Concise Catalogue of Oil
Paintings" gives the ship's name as
"Scottish Chieftain" but other sources
including Bowen give it as "Scottish Chief". The naming of the
ship in the
painting would originate with the artist. Another anomaly, is Bowen giving the name
of the
artist as "R.R. Spencer" when the painting is by "R.B. Spencer"
Ship details from a variety of sources including Basil Lubbock and the Lloyd's Registrry of British and
Foreign Shipping.
